Starting Out

Linda’s path into floristry started the way it does for a lot of florists, an early fascination with why some arrangements feel effortless and others feel forced. That curiosity turned into formal training, completing a recognised floristry qualification that covered the fundamentals most people never think about: how to condition stems so they last, which flowers genuinely pair well together rather than just look similar in a photo, how to build an arrangement that holds its shape instead of collapsing a day later, and the seasonal calendar that determines what is actually worth using at any given time of year.

That kind of training matters more than it sounds. Anyone can bunch flowers together. Understanding why a particular rose variety holds up better in Sydney’s humidity, or why native flowers often outlast imported blooms, is the difference between an arrangement that looks good in the photo and one that still looks good five days later on someone’s kitchen table.

A Decade Across Sydney’s Florist Trade

Over the following ten years, Linda worked across a number of florist businesses, from high-volume wedding and event florists where speed and consistency under pressure are non-negotiable, to smaller boutique studios where every arrangement gets individual attention. Each environment taught something different. High-volume work teaches discipline, how to maintain quality when you are arranging dozens of bouquets in a single morning, not just one. Boutique work teaches restraint, when to leave an arrangement alone rather than over-designing it.

By the time Linda had spent the better part of a decade in the trade, she had a clear sense of what she wanted to do differently if she ever ran her own florist, and just as clear a sense of what she wanted to avoid.

Why Hamblins Exists

A lot of florist businesses spend heavily on a retail shopfront, foot traffic, window displays, walk-in browsing, and that cost ends up folded into every bouquet’s price, whether or not the customer ever set foot in the store. Most Hamblins customers are ordering online for someone else entirely, a birthday interstate, a sympathy arrangement to a service they cannot attend in person, flowers to a partner’s office. They are not walking in to browse. Paying for a shopfront they will never see never made sense to Linda.

So Hamblins was built around a simpler idea: put the money into the flowers and the delivery, not the real estate. Every order is still hand-arranged fresh, by a real florist, to the standard Linda trained for and spent a decade refining. It is just built for how people actually order flowers today, online, for someone else, on a timeline that usually means today or tomorrow, not for browsing a shop window.

How It Actually Works

Hamblins works with a trusted local florist team to hand-arrange and fulfil every order, with Linda setting and maintaining the standard every arrangement is held to, from stem selection through to how each bouquet is finished and packed for delivery. That means the freshness and care in every bouquet is not a one-person bottleneck, it is a standard, trained and checked, applied consistently to every order that goes out.

Delivery works the same way. Rather than running a slow, limited delivery fleet, Hamblins partners with on-demand couriers to get same-day orders out fast, seven days a week, across North Sydney, the Lower North Shore, and out across greater Sydney. Order before 4pm and it goes out that day.

What Ten Years in the Trade Actually Teaches You

Ask Linda what she has learned and it is rarely about a single dramatic lesson, it is the accumulation of small ones. That peonies and tulips are genuinely seasonal and no amount of demand changes when they are actually available. That a sympathy arrangement calls for restraint, not more flowers. That a good birthday bouquet for a 21st and a good one for a 70th are rarely the same bouquet, even if the occasion sounds similar on paper. That the difference between an arrangement that survives a Sydney summer delivery and one that wilts by the afternoon usually comes down to decisions made hours before it ever left for delivery, how it was conditioned, hydrated, and handled.

None of that shows up in a product photo. It shows up five days later, when the arrangement someone ordered still looks like something worth having sent.

One thing a decade in floristry teaches that no amount of theory can: the same flower can be completely wrong for one occasion and exactly right for another. Bright, saturated colour that feels celebratory for a birthday can feel jarring sent to a family in mourning. A restrained, all-white arrangement that feels perfectly respectful for a funeral can feel cold and impersonal for a first anniversary. Linda built Hamblins’ occasion-based ranges, birthdays, sympathy, anniversaries, new babies, get well, around that understanding, not just as a way to organise a website, but because the occasion genuinely should shape the arrangement.

“Fresh flowers” is printed on the packaging of half the florists in Sydney, and it means very little without the discipline behind it. What it actually requires: sourcing stems close to the day they are needed rather than holding stock, conditioning them properly before they are ever arranged, using the right vase life extenders and water treatments for each flower type, and refusing to send out anything that would not meet the standard Linda would put her own name on.

That discipline is what determines whether a bouquet still looks good on day five, not just in the delivery photo. It is a less visible part of the job than the arranging itself, but it is where a decade of training and experience actually shows up, in the choices made before a single stem is placed.
